Bradford Islamic Centre — Community Mosque & Education Facility
This contemporary mosque and Islamic centre has been carefully designed as a landmark civic and educational building, combining traditional Islamic architectural principles with modern construction and materials.
The building is formed from a composition of solid stone base elements and refined upper volumes, wrapped in large glazed façades featuring intricate geometric mashrabiya-inspired screens. These patterned panels provide solar shading, privacy and identity while allowing generous natural daylight deep into the interior learning and prayer spaces.
A prominent entrance atrium marks the main approach, expressed through a full-height glazed feature framed in decorative metalwork. This creates a welcoming civic frontage and a clear point of arrival for visitors and worshippers. The vertical tower element references a minaret in a contemporary interpretation, acting as a visual marker within the street scene.
Internally, the centre functions as a state-of-the-art multi-use community facility, providing:
Main prayer hall
Flexible classrooms and teaching spaces
Community learning areas
Meeting rooms and counselling rooms
Youth activity spaces
Ablution and welfare facilities
Administrative offices
The first-floor volume projects above the ground level, forming a sheltered entrance and drop-off area, while active glazing maintains visual connection between the building and surrounding streets. Landscaping, cycle storage and on-site parking support daily use by both worshippers and the wider community.
The architecture aims to create more than a place of worship — it establishes a modern community hub that supports education, social wellbeing and cultural engagement for Bradford’s growing population.
